Barcelona is a coastal city in Spain that has a very intriguing culture. A part of Barcelona’s culture is language. In Barcelona, there are two main languages, Catalan and Spanish. Catalan is the ninth most spoken language in Europe. It is estimated that about eleven million people understand Catalan and about nine million people actually speak the language. The Catalan language was created between eighth and tenth centuries as an expansion of Latin, Spanish, French, Italian, and other Romance languages. Today, Catalan is taught in 166 universities and over 10,000 titles are translated to Catalan.
Another big part of Barcelona Culture is the FC Barcelona Soccer Team. The team’s records are dated all the way back to 1899, creating over 100 years’ worth of history. Hans Gamper was the original founder, who teamed up with eleven other soccer enthusiasts to start this club. The FC Barcelona club won the top title in Europe and was the only club featured every time in the edition of European club competition since the tournaments began. Today, FC Barcelona includes the best soccer player in the world, Lionel Messi. The team has a total of 24 players. This team is also known for having one of the largest “fan- nations”, their support from their fans comes internationally.
In Barcelona, Catholicism is the main religion, like the rest of Spain. However, less than a quarter of the total Spanish population are weekly churchgoers. Barcelona still has that Catholic environment, with the beautiful cathedrals and public religious artwork, which is one of the top reasons for the tourism. Islam is the second largest religion in Barcelona and Spain. About 3% of Spain’s population is Islamic. Judaism and several Protestant denominations make up a small chunk of the population as well.
An interesting part I found about Barcelona is the preforming arts today and in their history. In 1847, the Liceu Opera House was founded to preform opera and ballet. This great landmark was burned down in 1994. Another landmark of the preforming arts in Barcelona is the Roman Theatre. The theatre is a resemblance of Catalan- language drama from the 19th century. The Music Palace and the city’s symphony orchestra provide plenty of Classical music for Barcelona.
